Website Down Checker

Is a website down for everyone, or just you? Check any site in seconds.

How to check if a website is down

Enter the website address above and click Check now. Our server tries to load the site right away and tells you three things: whether it's up, how quickly it answered, and, if something's wrong, what the problem is in plain English.

Is it down for everyone or just me?

Because we check from our own server, not your computer, the result tells you whether the problem is the website or your connection:

  • Up for us, not for you: the problem is on your end. Try another browser, turn off your VPN or ad blocker, or restart your router.
  • Down for us too: the website itself is having trouble, so it's down for everyone. Waiting a few minutes usually helps.

Why websites go down

  • Hosting problems: the server crashed, ran out of resources, or the hosting company is having an outage.
  • Expired domain or SSL certificate: a lapsed renewal can take a site offline or show visitors a security warning.
  • DNS changes: a mistake in the domain's settings means browsers can't find the server.
  • Too much traffic: a sudden rush of visitors can overwhelm a small server.
  • Updates gone wrong: a new plugin, theme, or code change can break the site.

What to do if your own website is down

  1. Check whether you changed anything recently, like a plugin, theme, or setting.
  2. Log into your hosting account and look for outage notices or error messages.
  3. Make sure your domain and SSL certificate haven't expired.
  4. Contact your hosting company's support. They can see server errors you can't.

Once it's back, it's worth checking that it's healthy too. A slow website loses visitors almost as fast as one that's down.

Get alerted the minute your site goes down

Checking by hand only works when you already suspect a problem. Uptime monitoring checks your website every minute and emails or texts you the moment it stops responding. ValueTheWebsite uptime monitoring is coming soon.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if a website is down?
Type the website address into the checker above and click Check now. We try to load the site from our server and tell you whether it's up, how fast it answered, and what went wrong if it didn't.

Is a website down for everyone or just me?
If our checker says the site is up but it won't load for you, the problem is on your side, like your browser, VPN, Wi-Fi, or internet provider. If our checker can't reach it either, it's down for everyone.

Is this website down checker free?
Yes. You can check any public website for free, with no signup.

What does HTTP 500, 503, or 404 mean?
Codes in the 500s mean the website's server has an error, so the site is effectively down. 404 means the server is working but that specific page doesn't exist. 403 means the server is blocking access.

How can I get alerted when my website goes down?
Use an uptime monitoring service. It checks your site every minute and emails or texts you the moment it stops responding, so you can fix it before customers notice.
