How websites are valued

When a website is sold, the price is usually set as a multiple of its average monthly profit. A site that makes $1,000 a month after expenses might sell for $25,000 to $45,000, depending on what kind of site it is and how reliable that profit looks to a buyer.

Buyers use profit, not traffic, because two sites with the same number of visitors can earn very different amounts. That's why this calculator asks for profit and doesn't guess from traffic.

Typical multiples by type of website

Type of websiteTypical multiple of monthly profit
Content site or blog30–45×
Online store25–40×
Software or subscription (SaaS)35–60×
Service business or lead generation20–35×

These are rough ranges. Sites with less than a year of history usually sell for less, and sites with growing traffic and profit usually sell for more.

What raises a website's value

  • Steady or growing profit over at least 12 months
  • Several sources of traffic and income, not just one
  • Most traffic coming from Google search rather than paid ads
  • Little work needed each week to keep it running
  • A clean technical setup with no broken pages or security gaps

Search traffic is one of the things buyers value most. Our guide to 10 SEO optimization methods that actually work shows how to grow it.

What lowers a website's value

  • Profit that depends on one customer, one product or one traffic source
  • Falling traffic, or a recent drop in Google rankings
  • Technical problems a buyer would have to pay to fix
  • Missing records that make profit hard to prove

Before you sell, it's worth fixing the problems a buyer will spot. Our guide to what a good SEO score is explains what buyers look at.

Frequently asked questions

How much is my website worth?

Most websites that make money sell for a multiple of their average monthly profit, usually somewhere between 20 and 60 times, depending on the type of site, its age and whether traffic is growing. Enter your numbers above for an estimated range.

Can a website be valued without knowing its profit?

Not accurately. Tools that guess a value from traffic alone are often far off, because two sites with the same traffic can earn very different amounts. Profit is what buyers pay for.

What is a website worth if it makes no money?

Usually what it would cost a buyer to recreate it: the content, design, domain and any audience. For most small sites that's a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, unless the domain name itself is valuable.

Is this calculator an appraisal?

No. It's an estimate based on typical sale multiples. A real sale price depends on your records, how much work the site takes to run, and what a particular buyer is willing to pay.

Does SEO affect how much a website is worth?

Yes. Buyers look closely at where traffic comes from. Steady traffic from Google, a clean technical setup and links from respected websites make a site more attractive and less risky to buy.
