Etsy SEO: How to Get Your Listings Found (Plain-English Guide)

October 10, 2026 · 3 min read

Etsy has millions of shoppers, but they only find your products if Etsy's search shows them. SEO optimization on Etsy is about helping Etsy (and Google) understand exactly what you sell, so your listings appear when the right people search.

This guide explains how Etsy search works and walks through the changes that make the biggest difference, in plain English.

How Etsy search decides what to show

When someone searches on Etsy, it looks for listings that match the words they typed, then ranks them. Etsy says it considers things like:

  • Relevance: how well your title, tags, categories and attributes match the search
  • Listing quality: how often shoppers click, favorite and buy from your listing
  • Customer experience: your reviews, your shop's completeness and your customer service
  • Recency: new and recently renewed listings can get a short boost
  • Shipping price: listings with free or low-cost shipping can rank better in the US

You can't control everything, but relevance is fully in your hands, and that's where most sellers lose out.

Step 1: Write titles for shoppers, not robots

Your title should start with what the item actually is, in the words a shopper would type. Put the most important words first.

  • Good: "Personalized Dog Collar, Leather Name Collar for Large Dogs"
  • Not so good: "Gift for Him!! Best Seller!! Dog Collar Personalized Unique Handmade Custom"

Etsy recommends clear, readable titles. Stuffing in every keyword makes your listing harder to read and doesn't help.

Step 2: Use all 13 tags

Each listing gets 13 tags. Use every one. Tags are your chance to cover the other ways people search for the same thing.

  • Use phrases, not just single words: "leather dog collar" beats "leather" and "collar" separately
  • Include materials, styles, occasions and who it's for: "gift for dog lovers," "rustic wedding decor"
  • Don't repeat the exact category you already selected; use the space for new phrases

Step 3: Fill in categories and attributes

Categories and attributes (like color, material, occasion and holiday) act like extra tags. Shoppers often filter search results by them, and a listing with empty attributes can disappear from those filtered results. Fill in every attribute that applies.

Step 4: Write a clear first sentence in your description

The first sentence of your description should say plainly what the item is and who it's for. It's what shoppers read first, and it can appear in Google search results. Then add details: size, materials, how it's made, shipping time.

Step 5: Use great photos and fill all the slots

Photos don't help search directly, but they decide whether people click. More clicks and favorites improve your listing quality, which helps your ranking. Use all the photo slots, show the item in use, and make the first photo bright and clear.

Step 6: Complete your shop

Etsy rewards complete, trustworthy shops. Fill in your shop announcement, About section, shop policies and profile photo. Respond to messages quickly and keep your reviews strong.

Step 7: Show up on Google too

Etsy listings can also appear in Google search. Google reads your listing titles and descriptions, so clear, descriptive wording helps here as well.

If you also run your own website alongside your Etsy shop, it's worth making sure that site is in good shape too. Our guide to running a free SEO site analysis explains what to check.

Common Etsy SEO mistakes

  • Leaving tags unused, or using the same tags on every listing
  • Vague titles like "Beautiful Handmade Gift"
  • Empty attributes, which hide listings from filtered searches
  • Never renewing or updating old listings
  • High shipping prices compared with similar listings

Frequently asked questions

How long does Etsy SEO take to work?
Etsy usually picks up title and tag changes within a few days. Give a change at least two weeks before judging whether it worked.

Should I use the same keywords in my title and tags?
Yes, your most important phrase should appear in both. Use the rest of your tags for other ways people describe the same item.

Does renewing a listing help it rank?
New and recently renewed listings can get a small, short-term boost. It isn't a long-term fix; good titles, tags and photos matter more.

Do Etsy listings show up on Google?
Yes. Google indexes many Etsy listings, so clear, descriptive titles and descriptions help you get found outside Etsy as well.
