Shopify SEO: How to Optimize Your Shopify Store for Google (Step by Step)

October 10, 2026 · 4 min read

A Shopify store can't sell products nobody finds. SEO optimization on Shopify is how you get your products in front of people already searching Google for what you sell, without paying for every click.

Shopify handles a lot of the technical setup automatically. This guide covers what's already done for you, the settings you need to change yourself, and the common mistakes that hold Shopify stores back.

What Shopify handles for you

Every Shopify store comes with:

  • A sitemap at yourstore.com/sitemap.xml, updated automatically
  • A robots.txt file that keeps checkout and cart pages out of search results
  • Free SSL, so every page loads over https://
  • Canonical tags that tell Google which version of a product page is the main one
  • Mobile-friendly themes

That covers the basics. What Shopify can't do is describe your products in a way that matches how people search. That part is up to you.

Also selling on Etsy? Our Etsy SEO guide covers titles, tags and listings.

Step 1: Set your homepage title and description

In your Shopify admin, open your Online Store preferences and fill in your homepage title and meta description. The title should say what you sell, for example "Handmade Leather Wallets | Smith & Co." The description should give shoppers a reason to click, in under about 160 characters.

Step 2: Edit the search listing on every product

Each product, collection and page has a search engine listing section near the bottom of its edit screen. Click to edit it and set:

  • Page title: the product name plus a key detail, under about 60 characters
  • Meta description: what makes it worth buying, under about 160 characters
  • URL handle: short and readable, like /products/brown-leather-wallet

If you skip this, Shopify uses your product title and the start of your description, which often reads badly in Google. When you change the URL handle of an existing product, Shopify can create a redirect from the old address for you; make sure that option is ticked.

Step 3: Write real product descriptions

Many stores paste in the manufacturer's description. Google sees the same text on dozens of other stores and has no reason to rank yours. Write your own: what it is, who it's for, what it's made of, and why it's better. Use the words customers would search for.

Step 4: Add alt text to product images

Google can't see product photos, but it reads alt text. In the image settings for each product photo, add a short description like "brown leather bifold wallet, open." It helps you appear in Google Images and helps shoppers using screen readers.

Step 5: Organize products into collections

Collections are category pages, like "Men's Wallets" or "Gift Sets." They often rank better than single products because they match broader searches. Give each collection a clear title, a short written introduction and its own search listing.

Step 6: Keep your store fast

Every app you install can add code that slows your store down. Remove apps you don't use, compress large images before uploading, and choose a lightweight theme. Our guide on how to check if your website is slow walks through measuring it.

Step 7: Fix broken links and missing pages

When products sell out or get deleted, links to them break. Visitors land on "page not found" and leave. Add redirects for deleted products to a similar product or collection, using URL redirects in your Shopify admin. Our list of the 12 SEO checks every website needs covers what else to look for.

Common Shopify SEO mistakes

  • Copied manufacturer descriptions on product pages
  • Empty search listings, so Google shows awkward auto-generated text
  • Duplicate titles across product variants and collections
  • Too many apps slowing the store down
  • Deleted products with no redirects, leaving broken links

The quickest way to find these across your whole store is a full scan rather than checking product by product. You can see what a complete report looks like in this sample Full Report.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify good for SEO?
Yes. Shopify handles technical SEO well out of the box. Most Shopify SEO problems come from thin or copied product descriptions, empty search listings and slow apps, which you can fix yourself.

Do I need an SEO app for Shopify?
Not to get started. Shopify's built-in settings cover titles, descriptions, URLs and alt text. Some apps help with bulk edits on big stores, but each one can slow your site, so add them carefully.

How long does Shopify SEO take to work?
Google usually notices changes within days to a few weeks. Ranking for competitive product searches can take a few months.

Should I write a blog on my Shopify store?
It helps. Helpful articles answer questions your customers search for before they're ready to buy, and they give Google more reasons to send visitors to your store.
