Squarespace SEO: How to Optimize Your Squarespace Site for Google (Step by Step)

October 10, 2026 · 4 min read

Squarespace sites look great, but looking great doesn't get you found on Google. The good news is that SEO optimization on Squarespace is mostly about filling in a handful of settings correctly. Squarespace already handles a lot of the technical work for you.

This guide walks through what Squarespace does automatically, the settings you need to change yourself, and the most common mistakes that keep Squarespace sites out of search results.

What Squarespace handles for you

Squarespace takes care of several technical SEO basics out of the box:

  • A sitemap at yoursite.com/sitemap.xml that updates as you add pages
  • Free SSL, so your site loads over a secure https:// address
  • Mobile-friendly templates that adjust to phones and tablets
  • Clean page addresses that you can edit

That's a solid foundation. What Squarespace can't do is write your titles, descriptions and content for you, and that's where most Squarespace sites fall short.

Step 1: Set your site title and homepage description

Your site-wide SEO settings control how your homepage appears in Google. Open your site's SEO settings in the Squarespace panel and fill in:

  • Site title: your business name
  • Homepage title: what you do and where, for example "Maple Street Bakery | Fresh Bread in Portland"
  • Homepage description: one or two sentences that make someone want to click, under about 160 characters

If you leave these empty, Google picks something on its own, and it rarely chooses well.

Step 2: Give every page its own SEO title and description

Each page has its own SEO settings in the page settings panel. Open each important page (About, Services, Contact, every product or collection) and add:

  • SEO title: what the page is about, under about 60 characters
  • SEO description: a short summary of the page, under about 160 characters

Every title should be different. Duplicate titles are one of the most common problems we find on Squarespace sites, usually because pages were created from a template and never renamed. Our checklist of the 12 SEO checks every website needs explains why this matters.

Step 3: Clean up your page addresses

Squarespace lets you edit each page's URL slug. Short, readable addresses do better than leftovers like /new-page-3.

  • Good: /custom-cakes
  • Not so good: /page-2 or /copy-of-services

If you change the address of a page that's already in Google, add a URL redirect from the old address to the new one in your Squarespace settings, so you don't lose visitors or rankings.

Step 4: Add alt text to your images

Squarespace sites are image-heavy, and Google can't see images. Alt text describes each image in words. When you add or edit an image block, fill in its description or alt text field with a short, plain description, like "chocolate birthday cake with raspberries."

This helps Google understand your pages and helps visitors who use screen readers.

Step 5: Use one clear main heading per page

Every page should have one main heading (Heading 1) that says what the page is about. Squarespace templates sometimes use your site title as a heading, and some designs add several large headings per page. Check each page and make sure there's one main heading that matches what people search for.

Step 6: Keep your pages fast

Large images are the most common reason Squarespace sites load slowly, especially on phones. Resize photos before you upload them (around 2,500 pixels wide is plenty), and avoid stacking lots of video and animation on one page. Our guide on how to check if your website is slow shows how to measure it.

Step 7: Connect Google Search Console

Google Search Console tells you which searches bring people to your site and flags problems Google finds. Squarespace lets you verify your site with Google from its settings. Once connected, submit your sitemap (yoursite.com/sitemap.xml) so Google finds every page.

Common Squarespace SEO mistakes

  • Leaving the default SEO title and description empty on most pages
  • Duplicate titles on pages copied from templates
  • Huge images that slow down mobile loading
  • Hidden or password-protected pages that you meant to make public
  • Changing page addresses without setting up redirects

The fastest way to catch these is to scan your whole site at once instead of checking page by page. A free scan shows missing titles, duplicate descriptions, missing headings and slow pages across up to 100 pages. You can see what a full scan looks like in this sample Full Report.

Frequently asked questions

Is Squarespace good for SEO?
Yes. Squarespace handles the technical basics, like the sitemap, SSL and mobile layouts, well. Most Squarespace SEO problems come from missing titles, descriptions and alt text, which you can fix yourself.

Does Squarespace do SEO automatically?
Partly. It creates your sitemap and secure address automatically, but it can't write your page titles, descriptions or content. Those are up to you.

How long does Squarespace SEO take to work?
Google usually picks up changes within a few days to a few weeks. Rankings for competitive searches can take a few months to improve.

Do I need an SEO app or plugin for Squarespace?
No. Squarespace has the SEO settings you need built in. Spend your time filling them in well rather than adding extra tools.
