Wix SEO: How to Optimize Your Wix Website for Google (Step by Step)

October 10, 2026 · 4 min read

Wix makes it easy to build a website, and its SEO tools have improved a lot over the years. But a Wix site still won't rank on its own. SEO optimization on Wix comes down to using the built-in tools properly and avoiding a few common mistakes.

This guide covers what Wix does for you, the settings to fill in on every page, and the problems we see most often on Wix sites.

What Wix handles for you

Wix takes care of several technical basics:

  • A sitemap, created and updated automatically
  • Free SSL, so your site loads over https://
  • A robots.txt file you can edit if you need to
  • Built-in SEO tools, including a setup checklist that walks you through the basics
  • Mobile versions of your pages

That's a good start. What Wix can't do is write titles, descriptions and content that match what your customers search for.

Building on Squarespace instead? Our Squarespace SEO guide covers the same steps there.

Step 1: Work through the Wix SEO setup checklist

Wix has a built-in SEO checklist in your site dashboard. It asks for your business name and main keywords, then walks you through connecting Google Search Console and fixing the basics. It's the fastest way to cover the essentials, so start there.

Step 2: Set an SEO title and description on every page

In the Wix editor, each page has its own SEO settings in its page settings panel. For every important page, fill in:

  • Title tag: what the page is about, under about 60 characters
  • Meta description: a short, clickable summary, under about 160 characters
  • URL slug: short and readable, like /wedding-photography

Make every title different. Duplicate titles across pages are one of the most common problems on Wix sites. Our checklist of the 12 SEO checks every website needs explains why they matter.

Step 3: Use one main heading per page

Wix lets you style any text as a heading, which makes it easy to end up with several main headings, or none. Each page should have one main heading (H1) that says what the page is about. Use smaller headings (H2, H3) for sections below it.

Step 4: Add alt text to images

Wix sites often rely heavily on images. Google can't see them, but it reads alt text. In each image's settings, add a short description of what the image shows, like "bride and groom on the beach at sunset."

Step 5: Watch your page speed

Wix sites can slow down when pages are crowded with large images, videos, animations and third-party apps. Compress images before uploading, cut animations you don't need, and remove apps you're not using. Our guide on how to check if your website is slow shows how to measure it.

Step 6: Set up redirects when you change page addresses

If you rename a page or change its URL slug, links pointing to the old address break. Wix has a URL redirect manager in its SEO tools. Add a redirect from the old address to the new one so visitors and Google land in the right place.

Step 7: Connect Google Search Console

Search Console shows which searches bring people to your site and flags problems Google finds. Wix can connect it for you through the SEO setup checklist and submit your sitemap automatically.

Common Wix SEO mistakes

  • Leaving the default page titles, so several pages share the same title
  • Several main headings per page, or none at all
  • Heavy pages with large images, videos and animations
  • Changing page addresses without redirects
  • Thin pages with only a few lines of text and lots of images

Checking every page by hand is slow. A full scan shows missing titles, duplicate descriptions, heading problems and slow pages across your whole site at once. Here's what that looks like in a sample Full Report.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wix good for SEO?
Yes, for most small business websites. Wix's SEO tools cover the basics well. The main things holding Wix sites back are empty or duplicate titles, heavy pages and thin content, all of which you can fix.

Does Wix do SEO automatically?
It sets up the technical basics, like your sitemap and secure address, and its checklist guides you through the rest. You still need to write your titles, descriptions and page content.

How long does Wix SEO take to work?
Google usually notices changes within days to a few weeks. Ranking for competitive searches can take a few months of steady work.

Can a Wix site rank as well as a WordPress site?
For most small businesses, yes. Good titles, useful content, fast pages and links from other websites matter far more than which website builder you use.
